Planeteers

Planeteers was founded in Hamburg in December 2022 by a team of engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs committed to accelerating climate impact. The founding team, Florian Birner, Frank Rattey, and Prof. Jens Hartmann, bring together deep expertise spanning geochemistry, plant engineering and construction, high‑level management consulting, and pioneering academic research.

Collectively, the founders have held roles at leading global companies such as Linde, Bosch, and Airbus, as well as renowned research institutions in Hamburg and Kyoto, and multiple startup ventures. This uniquely broad technical and commercial background forms the foundation of Planeteers’ entrepreneurial spirit and positions the company at the forefront of carbon dioxide removal and decarbonization technologies.

United by a shared mission, the founders have grown Planeteers into an innovation‑driven organization that combines scientific rigor with practical engineering to deliver scalable, real‑world solutions for reducing global CO₂ emissions. Today, Managing Directors, Florian Birner and Frank Rattey, work closely with Prof. Jens Hartmann to continue scaling Planeteers’ impact and help steer the world toward a more sustainable, livable future.

In nature, atmospheric CO₂ reacts with rainwater and alkaline rocks creating mineralized water which stores carbon in the oceans for more than 10,000 years. Under natural conditions, this process takes thousands of years. Planeteers has engineered a system to accelerate the production of the mineralized water down to a few minutes while making it also measurable and scalable. Planeteers utilizes point source CO₂ emissions helping their customers to advance their decarbonization goals while creating a revenue stream for their biogenic CO₂ emissions. 

Why it matters?
The carbon budget for limiting global warming to 1.5°C is exhausting fast while CO2 emitters who want to act are being held back by a lack of carbon transport and storage infrastructure. Planeteers allows CO2 to be stored as mineralized water in the oceans, offering a simple shortcut to omit lengthy (sometimes close to a decade) conventional transport and storage infrastructure buildouts.

Florian and Frank are focused and highly driven on execution. Both combine extensive industry experience with the adaptable mindset of start-up entrepreneurs. Prof. Hartmann has decades of scientific experience in aquatic geochemistry and is an authority in this field.

What’s novel about Planeteers?
Typical CCS projects combine separate solutions for capturing, transporting, and storing carbon, which need to be in place simultaneously to succeed. Planeteers provides an end-to-end solution with carbon capture and storage allowing CO2 to be stored cost-effectively in rivers and oceans.
