Carmeuse is proud to announce our active role as a key partner in the Holcim-led Carbon Hub CPT01 project in Romania, which has secured substantial grant funding from the European Union Innovation Fund. This milestone project marks significant progress in decarbonizing the construction and industrial sectors in Eastern Europe, with a particular focus on cement and lime production.
The Carbon Hub project is the first large-scale, full-chain onshore carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiative of its kind in the region. Located in Câmpulung, Romania, the project will capture CO2 emissions from both cement and lime production processes, permanently storing them underground to significantly reduce industrial carbon emissions.
“We are proud to partner with Holcim Romania on this groundbreaking CCS initiative. Carbon capture and storage requires strong collaboration across industries, and this project shows how partnerships can make decarbonization a reality. Together, we are building the solutions of tomorrow — for our customers, our communities, and the planet.” — Ionel Ungureanu, Area Production Manager, Carmeuse.
“We are thrilled that the EU Innovation Fund is supporting our Romanian CCS project — a groundbreaking first for our region. As a leader in sustainable building solutions, we are on a mission to decarbonize the building industry. This grant is a vote of confidence in our next-generation technologies and will make our carbon capture project more viable and scalable. At the same time, it is crucial that we continue to have the support of Romanian and European authorities to turn this project into reality. We thank the EU, Carmeuse, and all our partners for their trust and collaboration in making this happen.” - Bogdan Dobre, CEO Holcim Romania.
As a key partner, Carmeuse brings essential expertise to the project, helping to build a robust and sustainable CCS value chain. Our involvement ensures that best-in-class technologies and operational know-how drive the success of this pioneering effort. Through our partnership with Holcim, we are demonstrating the critical role that cross-industry collaboration plays in making large-scale decarbonization a reality.
The Carbon Hub project was conceived as a public–private partnership, leveraging the strengths and resources of multiple industrial stakeholders. Carmeuse recognizes the importance of continued support from Romanian authorities and the European Union. Moving this project from vision to reality will require prompt adoption of secondary legislation for CO2 transport and storage, as well as streamlined permitting processes. Every step forward is crucial in the race to achieve a sustainable, low-carbon future.
The successful execution of the Carbon Hub project will depend on continued collaboration, regulatory progress, and additional resources beyond initial funding. One of the most important aspects that we always take into consideration when developing such a project is timely addressing our customers’ needs.
By managing expectations, we acknowledge that the funding is a crucial step, but we must double it by sustained effort and alignment among all stakeholders to bring this vision to implementation.
