WHAT IS BUTTERFLY?

 

The Butterfly project, represents an advancement in kiln technology enabling low-carbon lime production through a parallel flow regenerative oxyfuel kiln designed to capture and concentrate CO₂ directly at the kiln level, integrating carbon capture into the core process rather than treating emissions downstream.

The Butterfly project started as a collaboration between Carmeuse, CRM Group, the University of Liège, the University of Mons, CORETEC, and VOC Sens, and has received funding support from the Walloon region and the European Union.

 

WHAT WERE THE FINDINGS OF THE SUBSIDIZED PROJECT?

 

The construction of the industrial demonstrator started in June 2023. During the last campaign (March-April 26), Carmeuse achieved its target of reaching more than 80% CO₂ in the flue gas, while confirming the good quality of the lime product. Carmeuse also improved the reliability of the equipment and the instrumentation to properly measure CO₂.

The subsidized part of the project - a collaboration between Carmeuse and various partners - took place from mid '22 to June '26.

 

IS THE PROJECT ENDING?

 

The results achieved so far confirm the potential of the Butterfly technology and reinforce its importance in Carmeuse's decarbonization roadmap. As part of its objective to be carbon capture technology ready by 2028, Carmeuse will continue testing new technologies.
