Mankind is facing several sustainability challenges. Firstly, there are still important discrepancies in human development across the globe. Our products and services are critical to customers that supply solutions and materials essential to human development. For example, steel and construction are key for infrastructure and household equipment. Glass, water treatment, clean air, agriculture, base metals refinement or battery production are other important areas of human development that would not exist without our products and services.

Another sustainability challenge is the impact of greenhouse gases emissions on the climate, with CO2 being the main culprit.

At Carmeuse, we are targeting carbon-neutral products. We are also developing business opportunities for lime to capture CO2.

Sustainability also involves looking at energy use, biodiversity and the wellbeing of our employees. That is how, with our products and services, we contribute to a better world.

To fulfill our mission of contributing to a better world, we believe in our people, technology, and sustainable management.

Therefore, we continuously develop our teams and promote the following behaviors: Collaboration, Passion, Ownership and Honest Feedback. This guides us when we interact with customers, colleagues, partners, and stakeholders. As we care about our people, we have set health and safety at the top of our agenda, and we work daily to promote a safety culture in all our locations.

Our sustainability mindset also drives us to support our nearby communities according to their local context.

Technological innovation, supported by digital acceleration, is a key lever of the decarbonization challenge. This is why we continuously invest in new solutions that will help reduce CO2 emissions and support our objective of reaching net zero by 2050.

As we take sustainability to heart and act with passion and responsibility, our ambition is to be a champion of environmental stewardship.

People

Zero injury

Safety is, and will remain, our priority, with the ambition to reach zero injury.

Nothing that we do is worth getting injured. Specific KPI’s are followed at group level, such as the Recordable Injury Rate that describes the number of employees per 100 full-time employees that have been involved in a recordable injury or illness.

Some examples of actions: Observation tours, site safety plans & audits, 10 lifesaving rules, Mandatory safety training, training programs (VR, simulators, etc.), targeted injury reduction programs (hand, finger, eye), safety KPIs tracking.

Community Relations

At Carmeuse, we believe in giving back to our communities. We operate globally but maintain strong local ties.

Through the Carmeuse Foundation, we focus on helping children and young people in need, especially those living near our operations. We also run programs that address the real needs of local people, including food distribution, sports activities, and health initiatives. Learn more about Carmeuse Foundation.

Additionally, we organize local clean-up events around our facilities to keep our environment clean and healthy.

Development and Well-being

Our people are our most important asset. We give them the tools and resources to develop themselves and ensure their well-being. Our four core behaviors - Honest Feedback, Collaboration, Ownership, and Passion - are at the heart of everything we do. Together, we create an environment where all of us can have an impact.

Planet

CO2 Reduction

One of our biggest environmental impacts comes from CO2 emissions, mainly generated by hard-to-abate process emissions as well as combustion emissions. Carmeuse has developed a roadmap that guides us toward carbon neutrality by 2050, which will require upskilling, continuous investment, technological advancement. Visit our CO2 Roadmap to learn more.

Nature Preservation

We preserve nature to the best possible extent, notably through our quarry restoration projects. Carmeuse ensures that biodiversity, including wildlife, is not only preserved but also enhanced on our sites. This includes a tradition of planting trees across Carmeuse locations worldwide.

Resource Optimization

At Carmeuse, we strive to use the natural resources we extract and purchase as efficiently as possible. We are committed to transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy wherever we can, guided by our biomass and renewable electricity roadmaps.
