Understanding Your Market Needs

The fiberglass-making process also uses limestone for glass-making. Some companies prefer to use only quicklime. One of the main applications for fiberglass is mechanical reinforcement of plastic parts, such as in the automotive and sport goods (bicycles, skis, and hockey sticks) sectors. Reinforced plastic parts can replace metallic parts, in order to reduce the weight of a car for instance.

Since fiberglass producers are especially concerned about undissolved particles, micronized lime or limestone is generally preferred. Inclusion of undissolved components in the glass will generate instability/clogging in bushing and will create weak points in the fibres.

For process efficiency, some fiberglass producers prefer to use quicklime instead of limestone.
